Fun Greek and Latin Roots Word Activities for Kids

When I was in school, we didn’t really learn about the Greek and Latin roots of words, but I’ve found it to be a fascinating topic now that I’m a teacher. Once you start to notice patterns in words, it’s like unlocking a code that suddenly makes vocabulary, spelling and meaning so much clearer.

The truth is, a huge portion of the English language is built on Greek and Latin prefixes, suffixes and roots. When students understand these building blocks, they’re not just memorising individual words — they’re learning how to figure out unfamiliar words on their own. That confidence carries over into reading comprehension, spelling and even grammar.

But here’s the challenge: how do we teach something like this in a way that actually sticks and keeps students engaged?

If you’re looking for practical, classroom-friendly ideas, here are three of my favourite ways to make teaching Greek and Latin roots both effective and enjoyable.

Build Vocabulary with a Root of the Day

One of the simplest—and most effective—ways to introduce Greek and Latin roots is by establishing a consistent “root of the day” routine. This quick daily practice gives students regular exposure to word parts without feeling overwhelming.

Start by introducing a new root and exploring its meaning together, discussing what it tells us about the words it appears in. From there, look at a few example words as a class, breaking them apart and talking through how the root contributes to their meaning.

To deepen understanding, invite students to brainstorm their own words that include the root, or challenge them to use new vocabulary in a sentence. Then, add them to a class chart or display that students can refer to throughout the year.

Explore Vocabulary Through Interactive Puzzles

Once students have been introduced to Greek and Latin roots, finding engaging ways to revisit and review them is key to helping the learning stick—and that’s exactly where root puzzles come in. These simple but highly effective activities turn vocabulary review into a hands-on challenge that students actually enjoy.

Each puzzle is made up of two matching pieces. One piece shows the meaning of a root, while the other includes the root itself along with three example words. Students work to match the puzzle pieces together correctly.

This activity is a fantastic way to review multiple roots at once while keeping students actively engaged. It works well for independent practice, small group work, or even literacy centres.

Apply Knowledge with Root-Based Story Writing

Once students have been introduced to a range of Greek and Latin roots, it’s time to take their understanding a step further with a root story writing challenge. This activity encourages students to actively apply their vocabulary knowledge in a creative and meaningful way.

In this task, students are challenged to write a short story that includes as many words as possible sharing the same root. This pushes them to think carefully about word choice while reinforcing their understanding of how roots connect different words.

It’s a simple yet powerful way to move beyond recognition and into application, helping students deepen their vocabulary knowledge while also building their creative writing skills.

I hope that these ideas help you introduce Greek and Latin roots to your students in an engaging way! By building in simple routines, hands-on activities, and opportunities for creative application, you can help students develop a deeper understanding of how words work.
