Fun Map of Australia Geography Activities

Geography can sometimes be one of those less fun subjects to teach – but it doesn’t need to stay that way! With a little creativity, there are ways to shake up your Geography lessons, making them more engaging and fun for you and your students. In this blog post, I’ll guide you through some fun activities that you can use to teach Geography, Aussie style. Get ready to explore, discover and make Geography the highlight of your classroom. 

Australian Map Activities

Here are a few ideas you can use to help your students engage with maps of Australia. You can choose one or more of these options, depending on what works best for your students.

• Display the map to your class and talk through it together. Allow students to ask any questions they have.

• Have students colour in the different states and territories as you talk through the map.

• Have students label a blank map by themselves.

• Have students label a blank map with a partner and then discuss the map with the rest of the class. 

Activities for Australian States / Territories 

Once students are familiar with the map of Australia, you can start teaching them about individual states and territories. Here are a few activities to help your students learn about the different Australian states and territories.

• Display maps of the individual states / territories to your class and research some interesting facts about each state / territory together.

• Have students research a state / territory landmark with a group of peers.

• Have students research a state’s / territory’s symbols with a partner. 

• Have students complete their own research project for a state / territory, that includes information such as the climate, population, places of interest and historical information.

Creative Presentation Ideas for Student Research

If you have your students spend some time researching Australia or the Australian states and territories, allowing them to share that research in a creative way can help make the task extra engaging. Here are some creative ways that you can have students present their research to others.

• Have students design a poster that includes all the information they learnt about their state / territory.

• Have students record a video that teaches others about their state / territory.

• Have students create a slideshow focusing on their state / territory.

• Have students put together an informational booklet about their state / territory. You could even keep a mini library of all the booklets that are made in your classroom for students to look through during reading time.
